Pentatonic Scale Fingerings

The pentatonic scale is the one scale every guitarist knows. It can be played in five different positions, often called box shapes or just shapes. Each position lends itself to different kinds of lines because of the way the notes lay on the fingerboard, but that is another story. First you need to learn each position. Best method is to pick a single key and learn it up and down the fingerboard.

This applet, I call it the Pentatonic Mapper, shows the pentatonic scale fingering for the selected key. Root note of scale is shown as a square. One position is always highlighted in blue and you can move the highlighter around to show each of the 5 different positions using the Backward and Forward buttons. This was the first java applet I ever wrote!
