You don't think of note names when you play. Actually, if you don't think at all you're probably playing really well.
Note Finding Drill
How fast can you find any note on any string on the fingerboard? Hopefully you can go straight to it without thinking about it at all. That means you practiced, lots. I hope you read the previous lesson on locating the natural notes on the fingerboard. It really works. But you have to do it every day for a few minutes, for probably a month.
This applet allows you to test yourself. Click the button at the bottom for a new question. Always find the note on your guitar too. Play it and sing it --- you want to get the most out of this exercise, right?
When you are actually playing you will not be thinking of note names at all or if you do you will just be looking for 1 or 2 notes to get your bearings --- to find a chord shape, for example.
This program only allows you to pick notes from the nut thru the 11th fret, so don't worry about 12th fret and above. Press the "Click for another example" button at the bottom of the screen to start the applet.
